Faulting application svchost.exe

We ran into a problem with a machine receiving application errors on the SVCHOST.EXE application after running a windows update. the error received was “Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180. Faulting module msi.dll, version 3.1.4000.2435, fault address 0x00012780”

A process in the Windows update broke a component in the updater and generated the application error. We were able to work around this error by performing the following steps.

1.Go to the start menu
2.Right click "my computer"
3.Click "properties" then the "automatic updates" tab
4.Choose "turn off automatic updates"
5.Reboot your computer
6.Go back to start menu and in all programs go to "windows update". You have to be connected to the internet for this step
7.Manually update windows.
8.Turn your automatic updates back on.
